Twenty minutes will not clean an entire flat thoroughly. It can, however, remove the grit underfoot, the toothpaste round the basin and the crumbs where you prepare lunch. Treat this weekly session as a targeted clean of frequently used surfaces, rather than a race to finish every household job.

Choose a time when the kitchen and bathroom are available. If somebody is cooking or showering, swap the order instead of working round them. Have a timer, a rubbish bag, separate kitchen and bathroom cloths, and suitable cleaning products ready before you start.

Minutes one to four: expose the surfaces

Carry cups to the kitchen and put loose clothing in its proper place. Move papers into their existing tray without opening letters. This is preparation for cleaning, not a decluttering session: investigating an old receipt can consume the time intended for the bathroom.

Clear enough worktop to wipe it properly. Put clean, dry washing-up away and load the dishwasher if you have one. Without a dishwasher, stack dirty crockery safely beside the sink and accept that washing a large pile may require a separate session.

Minutes five to nine: clean the bathroom touchpoints

Use the bathroom cloth for the basin, tap and surrounding splashes. Apply any product according to its label, including the stated contact time where relevant. A quick spray followed by immediate wiping is not necessarily the intended method.

Use separate equipment for the toilet, and work from cleaner areas towards dirtier ones. Do not take that cloth back to the basin or kitchen. Clean a marked mirror only where needed rather than polishing every reflective surface. Leave difficult limescale for a planned treatment suitable for the fitting.

Minutes ten to fourteen: restore the kitchen

Brush crumbs into your hand or a dustpan before wiping; dragging them round with a wet cloth makes more work. Clean the food-preparation surface with a product suitable for that material, following any rinsing instructions. Wipe the sink and remove food caught in the strainer.

Do not start on the oven, fridge drawers or cupboard interiors. Those jobs need emptying, drying or more attention than this slot allows. If you notice a leaking bottle or spoiled food, deal with that specific problem without expanding into a full kitchen overhaul.

Minutes fifteen to eighteen: follow the dirt route

Vacuum or sweep the entrance and the most-used kitchen floor area. In a compact flat these often account for much of the loose dirt that gets carried elsewhere. Lift a light mat if practical, but do not move heavy furniture.

Spot-clean sticky marks using the floor manufacturer's advice. Avoid leaving a wet entrance just before someone arrives home. A washable mat or clear shoe area can reduce the amount of grit next week's session has to handle.

Use the last two minutes to close properly

Empty a full bin, take used cloths to their washing or drying point, and put products back securely. Do not leave a cleaning caddy in the path because the timer has sounded. Finishing the equipment matters as much as finishing the surface.

If twenty minutes repeatedly leaves the same important task untouched, give that task its own slot or share it with another household member. This routine is a weekly baseline for a busy flat, not a substitute for washing bedding, cleaning the shower or responding promptly to spills.
