A chest of drawers stays useful when its contents can move without collapsing. If every drawer needs a shove, a careful folding session will not last. Start with the drawer that causes the most trouble and solve its capacity before changing the whole bedroom.

Empty that drawer onto a clean surface and check the runner and base. A sagging bottom or damaged mechanism needs attention; reducing clothing may help access, but it does not repair the furniture. Keep heavy loads within the manufacturer's guidance.

Assign drawers by the way you dress

Underwear and socks usually benefit from an easy-to-reach drawer. Everyday tops, trousers and nightwear can occupy separate broad groups. Arrange the order around your routine and reach, not an assumption that everyone uses the same drawer layout.

For a shared chest, make ownership clear. Two people searching through one mixed drawer can undo an arrangement quickly. Separate sections may be enough where storage is limited, provided each person can return their clothes without rearranging the other's.

Check the whole category

Include clean clothes currently in a laundry basket before deciding the drawer has enough room. A half-empty drawer on wash day can hide the real volume. Allow for the garments normally worn and washed, not just those present during the tidy-up.

Remove items belonging elsewhere, including seasonal clothing, repair jobs and papers left on top. Keep useful extras where they can be found, but do not let a collection of rarely worn clothing occupy the only easy drawer for daily essentials.

Fold to fit the depth

Choose a fold that lets you see and remove items comfortably. Upright rows can suit T-shirts in a deep drawer; a shallow drawer may work better with short stacks. There is no benefit in forcing every fabric into one prescribed shape.

Do not make rolls so tight that retrieving one item lifts the entire row. Leave space for fingers and for ordinary returns after washing. Delicate, structured or easily stretched garments may need different storage rather than a more elaborate fold.

Use dividers only where things mix

Socks and underwear often benefit from a few broad sections. Larger garments may stay separate without inserts. Measure internal dimensions before adding containers, and check that an organiser does not consume the very space needed for the clothes.

Avoid loose boxes that slide into the back or catch when the drawer closes. If you use existing containers, make sure edges are smooth and the contents remain accessible. The divider should stop mingling, not create a set of tiny targets people have to hit exactly.

Maintain while putting washing away

Use the return of clean laundry as a quick check. If a section no longer accepts its normal contents, find the reason before compressing it. A new clothing purchase, seasonal change or a growing repair pile may have altered the volume.

Keep the top of the chest available for its intended purpose rather than allowing overflow to become a second wardrobe. A small tray for genuinely daily items is different from several layers of clothing. When each drawer has a clear category and comfortable spare capacity, the arrangement can survive an ordinary week without needing a complete refold every Sunday. That is the useful standard to aim for.
